WEBP IN CHROME

Save a WebP as JPG from Chrome.

Chrome may download the image format provided by the website, even when the next app only accepts JPG. Use the extension's Convert image command to create a new file in the format you need.

Keep the original imageProcess a selected local file and create a separate result.

QUICK ANSWER

Convert the image instead of renaming it

Right-click the image, choose Convert image..., select JPG, and save the new copy. If the website blocks direct image access, download the WebP first and add it to the extension as a local file.

HOW TO DO IT

Follow these steps.

  1. 01

    Right-click the image

Open Chrome's context menu on the image and choose Convert image....

  2. 02

    Allow access when Chrome asks

The extension requests access to the selected page only after your action. It does not require permanent access to every website.

  3. 03

    Choose JPG or PNG

Use JPG for photographs and broad compatibility. Use PNG when transparency or lossless pixels must remain.

  4. 04

    Save the converted copy

Download to the default folder, use a chosen folder, or ask where to save each time.

THE EXPLANATION

Why Chrome keeps saving WebP

Chrome usually saves the image resource the website actually serves. If the website provides WebP, the downloaded file is WebP.

Changing the filename to .jpg does not change those bytes. Software that checks the real format can still detect WebP and reject the file.

The extension creates a separate JPG, PNG or WebP output. It does not modify the source image on the website and does not pretend that renaming is conversion.

LIMITATIONS

When the right-click flow may not work

  • Some websites use protected, temporary or script-generated image URLs that Chrome cannot fetch again.
  • If the direct page-image flow fails, download the source and add it as a local file.
  • JPG cannot keep transparency. Choose PNG when transparent pixels must remain.
  • The extension handles only the image you explicitly select; it does not scan unrelated page content.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions.

Why did Chrome save a WebP?

The website served a WebP resource, and Chrome saved that resource. Chrome did not secretly change a JPG into WebP after downloading it.

Does renaming .webp to .jpg work?

No. It changes the filename but leaves the WebP data inside the file unchanged.

Should I choose JPG or PNG?

Choose JPG for photographs and broad compatibility. Choose PNG when transparency or lossless pixels matter.

Can I convert local files too?

Yes. Open the Side Panel to convert local JPG, PNG, WebP and supported HEIC or HEIF files.

Can I convert a batch?

Yes. The Chrome extension supports a local batch of up to 100 selected images.

Does the extension upload the image?

The conversion runs on the device. The extension may access the specific page image after your action and may use optional analytics or feedback services, but image bytes are not uploaded for conversion.
